NEWSLETTER No. 3 : 2018–2019
I cannot remember a so called Spring with such a continuous period of severe wet weather as we have recently experienced. Surprisingly everything is now running late, with our first setting of pheasant eggs one week later than normal. However at last we can now see the sun so we will no doubt catch up, we normally do.
Game Sales – A New Initiative: The British Game Alliance: BGA
I have always tried to achieve one of our sport’s main codes of practice.
“You should not shoot it unless you know you have a market for it”.
So far I have always been able to achieve this. In the new season I can confidently say that all our saleable birds will enter the food chain. There are always damaged birds where parts of the bird can be processed or used for other products. This is something I am continuing to work on.
We do however have a big problem in our industry. There is a significant increase in the demand and availability of driven game shooting, which in turn has produced an increase in shot game. Unfortunately this is not being matched by the present lack of demand for shot game which is in a worrying decline. In the last two years a number of game processors have gone out of business. One reason given is due to the strict food hygiene regulations which all processors must abide by which has produced a high cost in the processing of game.
You may think this is bad enough. In France if a Shoot wishes to sell game to a game processor for the retail market, there must be a Vet present on the Shoot when the birds are shot. No doubt a number of French Vets will be taking up shooting!
I appreciate I have been able to find a home for our game at little or no income which I am happy to live with. It would be great to receive some revenue for our quality product. Hopefully this may come in the future.
I am aware that processors are unhappy with the varying quality and size of birds from some Shoots with many being rejected. Maybe this is why we can move all our birds as we do not over stock and grade the birds hard after shooting before despatch to the processors.
You could say our sport is at a bit of a watershed. We are under more scrutiny than ever so we must ensure as an industry that we should get our house in order.
The British Game Alliance: BGA: www.britishgamealliance.co.uk
The BGA is being established to promote the value of British Game in the UK and overseas as a National Marketing Board. It will run a “British Game” Assurance Scheme for participating shoots allowing members to establish “best practice” whilst accessing new markets and benefiting from the increased value of game. So far the BGA, which will be up and running during May 2018, has received unanimous support and backing from every organisation within our industry as well as the All Party Parliamentary Group for shooting.
Part of this initiative is to establish a “Red Tractor” type of Assurance Scheme to ensure the provenance of our game meets rigorous, ethical and sustainable standards. There will be a significant cost in setting up and promoting this Scheme.
It is therefore proposed that everyone involved in game shooting, agents, shoots etc., should pay a tiered subscription for annual Membership. This will be based on the number of birds we shoot. Each of our three Shoots would pay a £1,000 Membership fee.
In addition to the Membership fee there is a proposed voluntary levy of 50p per bird shot to be paid by the guns on or before the day. In principal this is workable; however I feel we should await further details as to how Membership fees and the levy will be spent.
I will keep you advised as further information becomes available or you can visit their website.
Review For 2017-2018 Season and Proposals for our New 2018-2019 Season
I have just read my 2016 review which is exactly what I have to say about our last season in 2017/18. Very challenging due to too many warm, mild and sunny days with the birds spread over the countryside in search of the abundant supply of natural food and not necessarily in the drives where we wanted them to be!
However there was a difference as during December 2017/18 when we had what we thought was a welcome change in the weather, with some real frost and snow. Something we had not experienced for quite a number of seasons. Surprisingly these conditions did not really help us as once it had stopped snowing the “wonderful” sun came out to torment us once again. It was certainly another challenging season but as always our keepers and beaters produced some excellent days with a very few I prefer to forget.
As usual our birds were spread out just at the time we needed to catch up. But we still managed to catch up over 2,000 hen pheasants we required for our laying field and other game hatcheries.
HARDCASTLE & HEATHFIELD MOORS: RETURNS FOR 2017
HARDCASTLE MOOR
Brace Average bag per Day 10 year average 5 year average
Up to 2016 - - 530 787
2017 993 90 602 804
HEATHFIELD MOOR
Brace Average bag per Day 10 year average 5 year average
Up to 2016 - - 355 572
2017 721 90 418 625
As you will see from the above figures we experienced our second best season in my 17 years of managing the Moors. It should be noted we achieved our first 100 brace drive ever on Heathfield Moor. This was even after Natural England and The Yorkshire Peat Partnership spent four months “improving” the Moor. It just shows how amazing grouse are, in being able to adapt to new conditions. We have left a good stock on both Moors but our grouse counts are slightly down on last season. As always these wonderful birds will do what they want to do and keep us all guessing!!
RETURN ON BIRDS RELEASED AT EAGLE HALL & ASHFOLD SIDE 2017-2018
Pheasant Partridge Overall
10 year average 47.11% 45.87% 46.90%
2016-2017 41.65% 49.95% 45.70%
Bird shot average: 4.91. Birds shot in excess of the target bag for the season: 8.63%
George and his team achieved another excellent season particularly on partridge.
In the new season with John leaving and not being replaced. As George has always wanted to shoot less days, we plan to release a similar number of birds as in the past but with less days. By visiting each drive on fewer occasions the birds should perform even better. We must wait and see.
RETURN ON BIRDS RELEASED AT RIPLEY CASTLE, NIDD, HOB GREEN AND CAYTON 2017-2018
Pheasant Partridge Duck Overall
10 year average 44.91% 32.80% 68.24% 42.36%
2017-2018 42.75% 34.95% 66.92% 40.62%
Bird shot average: 3.60. Birds shot in excess of the overall target bag for the season: 6.60%
We plan similar releases to past seasons of pheasant and partridge on all areas except Cayton. Now having both the sporting and farming leases on Cayton we are able to make a considerable increase in wild bird cover. As this land is ideal for partridges our plan is to increase our partridge releases in the new season which should give us even more challenging birds at Cayton
This is the second season when we will be incubating all our own pheasant chicks so am looking forward to the result
RETURN ON BIRDS RELEASED ON MOUNTGARRET 2017-2018
Pheasant Partridge Overall
2016-2017 45.06% 40.00% 42.97%
2017-2018 42.48% 50.72% 45.87%
Birds shot average: 3.29. Birds shot in excess of the target bag for the season: 9.08%
Having now completed our second season on Mountgarret there is still much to do to bring the Shoot to the level established on our other Shoots. We found some of the game cover was in the wrong place, which will be rectified in the new season. The main change will be the increase in the number of partridge released and a reduction in pheasant.
It
has certainly taken far longer than I thought it would to bring Mountgarret up
to the standards of my other shoots.
However I know we are moving the right direction
I
do feel the changes we are making will bring about a transformation in the
shoot.
Exclusive Membership
I am often asked if there are any cheap days available where I have been unable to sell all the pegs. There are days normally available however in my mind, these days should be offered to guns who support the Shoot.
As the majority of our days are sold by the gun per day to individual guns or small parties making up the team on a shoot day. I have established Exclusive Membership as a way of thanking and rewarding individual guns for their support.
Purchasing shoot days to the value of £2,500 or more before VAT qualifies for Exclusive Membership. This applies to individual guns or where a team have booked, paid individually and collectively achieved £2,500 or more before VAT, and then all members of the team are eligible for Exclusive Membership.
The
following are the present benefits for Exclusive Members:
Last Minute Availability for Exclusive Members
It is inevitable that by the way I run the Shoot selling mainly to individual guns, that once the season starts I am often faced with the dilemma of whether or not to field a day where some pegs remain unsold. In the past I have sometimes cancelled days and asked guns to move to other days, or invited shoot guests and farmers at the last minute to take up a peg, which I may well still continue to do. A day will be run providing a minimum of six pegs have been sold but the target bag may be revised in line with the number of guns fielded.
Exclusive Members will be offered by e-mail, at
reasonably short notice a selection of dates where there are unsold pegs. You will receive a list of dates with
attractive discounts offered on the original fee. I know there will definitely
be a number of offers of days in the new season at discounted prices.
You may purchase as many of the discounted pegs as you
wish for yourself and to bring one or more guests on any of the days not just
the days you have already booked. You
must of course be present on the day when you bring a guest at the discounted
rates.
Exclusive Membership Card for Exclusive Members
In order to verify your Exclusive Membership of Ripley Sporting each Exclusive Member will be issued with a plastic card. The card includes your membership number with my contact phone numbers on the reverse. Should any of the retailers and suppliers require verification of your membership they can contact me at any time.
In
order to protect your privacy no names, addresses or contact details will be
given to a third party.
For
eligible guns this season’s card will be with you very shortly, or may well
have already arrived.
Purchasing Discounts for Exclusive members
There are a number of retailers and suppliers who support our shoot and are prepared to offer attractive discounts on selected products and supplies.
Shoot Days
We have had an encouraging take up of days but slightly down compared to last season. Maybe the wet weather is affecting more than just ground conditions!! I would like to thank those of you who have booked days in the new season and particularly those of you who have paid your initial shoot fees.
I will be sending by post a copy of your confirmation and I would appreciate if you could double check this in order to ensure we both have the same dates!!
Remaining Shoot
Days
I enclose a list of our remaining days. Details are also available on our website www.ripleycastleshoot.com and GunsOnPegs website www.gunsonpegs.com . Although a number of full days have been taken there seems to be more individual guns taken than in the past. Mainly one to three guns with many guns from abroad.
The consequence of this is that there are more days than ever with a few guns remaining on the day. Which has given us a larger than ever variety of days available. We still have every size and type of day available, many of which have not been previously offered. So please check if there are any new opportunities for you to join us, I do hope so.
Boundary Days
As always I try to field days to suit as many guns as possible. Last season we fielded a number of 80 bird Boundary Days. Although very successful it was hard to keep the bag down to 80 birds. I have included some 120 bird days in the new season but have still been requested to put on days with a smaller target bag.
In addition to these 120 bird days I have now included some 100 bird days on Mountgarret. These are competitively priced no frills days with no catering included except for drinks throughout the day and pie and soup at lunchtime. I hope these may be of interest.
Nigel Graham
I am very pleased to report that Nigel’s recovery continues. He is in a special new rehabilitation centre for Stroke patients in York and hopes to be home during June. I could see a significant improvement in him. There is still some way to go but am sure he will make it. I know we will see him on some days during the new season.
Website
This now seems to be the most popular form of advertising so our website will undergo a further upgrade during the summer. Please keep visiting www.ripleycastleshoot.com
Shoot Dinner
On 17th February 2018 we had possibly the most enjoyable evening we have ever had, when 95 guests, Landlords, Members and staff experienced the finest dinner Ollie Stewart and his staff have ever prepared for us. It was an evening to remember.
Please
make a note in your diary for our next Shoot Dinner on Saturday 9th
February 2018 at Ripley Castle.
General Data Protection Regulations: GDPR
This is possibly one of the most important recent pieces of legislation. GDPR is certainly a step forward in securing the safety of our personal information.
As you are aware I like to keep everyone advised on the progress of the Shoot as well as news within our industry. In order to do this I keep your contact details securely on file which will not be passed to a third party. To assist with this I hope you will agree to “Opt In” to my request to keep this information and continue to send details to you as available.
This request will be sent to you very shortly with access to our Privacy Policy also detailed in the e-mail.
I look forward to receiving your continued support and to keeping you updated on what I feel will be an eventful season.
