Newsletter No.2 2018-2019
March 2018
When
you book a shoot day you expect everything to be perfect. On our part we try to achieve this; however
Nature has a way of taking control. In
my 25 years of running Shoots I have never before experienced such a
challenging season with so many warm, still, sunny days with constant high pressure. Then when we had a breeze it would turn into
a gale and of course as always we had our quota of torrential rain. Even so thanks to the hard work of our
keepers and beaters we had some excellent days, with a few sadly I prefer to
forget!
We then experienced our first proper winter for a number of years with the snow and ice costing us two days at Eagle Hall & Ashfold Side.
We thought it could not get any worse but it did and we were faced with some real snow and ice in February and into March. This was certainly unwelcome just at the time we wanted to be out killing vermin but all our traps were frozen solid. We did however succeed in catching up over 2,000 hen pheasants for our laying field and other game farms.
I always say we are busier out of season and as ever this year is no exception. No matter what “Mother Nature” throws at us George, David, Martin and their teams still persevere.
So what is new:
High Cayton Farming
Many of you will recall that when we shot the Cayton Beat of Ripley Castle Shoot the tenant farmer was not the most accommodating to the Shoot. However as he has now retired I decided there was an opportunity to both grow our own wheat and increase our wild bird cover. So I have been successful in taking the farming lease on 300 acres.
We will now be able to produce all the wheat we require for Ripley Castle and Mountgarret which must be an environmental plus. There is also an excellent opportunity to establish an increased area of wild bird cover from 8 acres to 60 acres. Part of this will extend our Cayton II drive which is possibly the most challenging and consistently reliable partridge drive on the Ripley Castle Shoot. This increased area of cover borders onto Hob Green Woods so should also improve the holding of birds for our Hob Green drives.
There are some areas which are only suitable for grazing so these have been let to Sarah Pillar, wife of Matt Pillar one of our Ripley Castle Keepers. Sarah already grazes parts of our land at Ripley Castle so with her flock of over 200 Romney sheep plus one or two interesting breeds, she should be able to keep these areas tidy.
As you can imagine I know nothing about arable farming so my good friend Jonathan Hammond will be carrying out all the agricultural work. We must wait and see how my first year as a farmer goes!!
So what has changed:
Hardcastle & Heathfield Moors
The one good thing about the recent frost and snow is that it has been ideal for our excellent stock of grouse by controlling the worm and other diseases.
George is quietly confident we should experience another acceptable season. However as always grouse is a gamble and they will try and do the opposite to what we would expect.
Eagle Hall & Ashfold Side
John Clayton who has been with the Shoot since I took the Eagle Hall lease 16 years ago has taken a Head Keeper position on a local syndicate shoot. We wish him every success in this new position. You will be pleased to hear that Debbie his wife will still be looking after us on a shoot day.
George has always wanted to field less days so we have decided not to replace John but to reduce our days compared to last season by 11. We all know the longer we leave a drive between visits the better it is. So I expect some drives may be better than ever, if this were possible!
Ripley Castle : Nidd : Hob Green & Cayton
This is our second season when we will be incubating all our own pheasant chicks produced from eggs laid on our own laying field. We are using hen pheasants caught up at Ripley Castle and Mountgarret with Kansas and Bezante cocks brought in from elsewhere. We will be increasing our partridge in line with the additional wild bird cover at Cayton.
I am very confident of another great season at Ripley Castle.
Mountgarret
We have just completed our second season when most days were acceptable but some were definitely not.
When I took this shoot I identified the excellent potential for partridge, although there are some acceptable pheasant drives. You remember the partridge long after you have forgotten the pheasants. With this in mind we have relocated a number of wild bird cover crops particularly for partridge.
However the main change, which I should have made last season is to cut back on the pheasant and increase the partridge released with 40% pheasant and 60% partridge in the birds released. There are a number of other important changes which I propose making in the way the days are run. So I am confident these changes will avoid many of the problems experienced last season.
Available Days
I would like to thank everyone who has already made a booking for the new season which has given a very acceptable take up of days. As you will see from the attached list of our remaining days there is still a good variety of days available, many which were not on the initial list.
The list of remaining days is updated daily on our website or contact Lynda on 01423 323321 or by e-mail info@ripleycastleshoot.co.uk for an updated list.
Exclusive Days for full Teams
There are still days where no guns have been taken. These are available for full teams and are ideal as Exclusive Days for Roving Syndicates or for entertaining friends and clients. The costs are the same as our other days just choose a date and the bag can be tailored to suit you.
Given the present demand for days I suggest you consider these quite soon.
Exclusive Membership
It is inevitable that by the way I run the Shoot selling mainly to individual guns, by the gun per day, that once the season starts there will be some unsold pegs. A day will be run providing a minimum of six pegs have been sold but the target bag may be revised in line with the number of guns. I am often asked if there are any odd pegs available at a reduced cost. For me discounted days begin with those of you who have already booked days. So I established our Exclusive Membership as a way of thanking and rewarding individual guns for their support. Purchasing shoot days to a value of £2,500.00 or more before VAT qualifies for Exclusive Membership. This applies to individual guns or where a team have booked, paid individually and collectively achieve £2,500.00 or more before VAT, then all members of the team are eligible for Exclusive Membership.
Exclusive Members are offered by e-mail, at reasonably short notice, a selection of dates where there are unsold pegs. You will receive a list of dates with attractive discounts offered on the original fee. You may purchase as many of the discounted pegs are you wish for yourself and to bring one or more guests on any of the days not just the days you have already booked. You must of course be present on the day when you bring a guest at discounted rates.
Depending on the take up of days which remains very good at present, I would hope to send out a number of offers during the summer and into the season. However to be eligible to take advantage of these you need to have previously purchased days to the value for £2,500 plus VAT. If at present you have purchased days below the value you can always add more to make up the amount required.
Exclusive Members will receive a plastic card during May which will entitle them to receive attractive discounts on clothing and accessories at selected retail stores.

Instructors and Loaders
I doubt you would take up playing golf or possibly any sport without instruction from a professional. So I cannot see any difference between other sports and shotgun shooting.
Over the years I have convinced many of my friends that having someone to look after them on the day can be a real advantage and improve their performance. It also gives them plenty of time to work their dog at the end of a drive when they don’t need to worry about their gun or clearing up their spent cartridges.
For anyone new to and with limited driven game shooting experience it is essential. On the grouse Moor not many guns now shoot without a loader, even when shooting single guns. Having two pairs of eyes spotting on the Moor, I feel really improves your day. After over 50 years of driven game shooting I now never shoot without a loader.
Having a loader to stuff cartridges is very useful, however having one of our loader/instructors to show you where you are possibly going wrong, really does improve your day. My encouraging guns to have someone with them has given me a problem as our instructor/loaders are now in great demand, not only on our Shoot but by guns taking them elsewhere. So for this reason if you wish to have someone to look after you could you please let me know as soon as possible. The cost remains as previous seasons £90 for the instructor/loader for the day paid direct to them.
Shotgun Hire
The law states that anyone may use a shotgun without a UK Shotgun Certificate or Visitors Permit provided it is in the presence of the owner who has the serial number of the shotgun used registered on his Shotgun Certificate or Visitors Permit and the required insurance cover is in place. Shotguns are available for hire, provided notice is given, from our instructor/loaders at £50 per day. Knowledge of height and if he or she is left or right handed would help in selecting the most ideal shotgun available.
Four Wheel Drive Vehicle Courtesy Vehicles
As more and more guns are travelling some distance to shoot with us, we now have available on all three Shoots a long wheel base Land Rover Station Wagon with a driver which will seat up to five people comfortably. If required we can provide transport for a full team (3 vehicles) providing the vehicles are not being used on our other Shoots. Each vehicle is available at no cost to the guns or their guests, however prior booking is recommended to ensure space is available. Your dog will travel in the Keepers vehicles. The demand for this service is growing so I suggest you give as much notice as possible.
Hotels
The Boar’s Head in Ripley Village is ideal for both Ripley Castle and Mountgarret Shoots. As Harrogate continues to attract more and more conferences and exhibitions each year. I found that quite often The Boar’s Head was fully booked on many dates last season.
The Boar’s Head offers excellent value and there are special rates for shoot members. I therefore suggest you book your accommodation as soon as ever possible.

Nigel Graham
I am pleased to advise Nigel continues to improve but at a slow pace. He has been moved to a purpose built stroke centre near York where he expects to stay for a few more weeks. As you can imagine he is determined to make a full recovery and everyone will be doing everything possible to help him achieve this.
Clive Wells
It is with great sadness that I advise of the sad loss of one of the four founder members of our Shoot. I am very pleased that the other three founder members Graham Stow, Matt Morton and myself were in attendance at the funeral, as were our Ripley Castle Keepers. The service was very Clive, no frills and down to earth.
I shot with Clive for over 35 years and he was a very good friend to both myself and the Shoot. Before he retired from shooting he hosted shoot days and had quite a following. I respected him so much as he always spoke his mind and his advice was unfailingly correct.
Finally I would
like to thank everyone for their good wishes following my knee surgery. Overall it has gone well. Everyone says I must do the exercises. This is easy to say but when I felt very sore
it was difficult!
I will be fully recovered well before the start of our season so should at least be able to keep up with you all!
