NEWSLETTER No. 3 : 2019–2020 SEASON
Everything is progressing really well, our incubators are full of pheasant and partridge eggs, with chicks hatching twice each week.
Our first pheasant poults will be released
in mid June and partridge poults mid July.
So as you can imagine everything is full on.
All we now need is some heavy rain to put
much needed moisture into the very dry ground ready for sowing our game cover
during May and June.
Shot Game Sales
The topic of conversation when we meet is often the market for our shot game. One of the main objectives of any reputable Shoot should be “To ensure you have a market for your shot game before it is reared and shot” So far we have always been able to achieve this.
However although we should all be
delighted in the increased popularity of driven game shooting. I am concerned that the number of new shoots
being established together with significantly larger bags on many established
Shoots, which has increased the amount of dead game on the market. May have unwelcome consequences for our
sport.
Since being established only 12
months ago The British Game Alliance BGA has made significant progress in
addressing this problem but I feel their initiative to promote British Game to
foreign markets may take some time. They
are certainly helping the home market but we must also take every opportunity
to help ourselves.
I have a plan for the new season
but thought you may like to see how our shot game sales have collapsed in a
very short period of time.
2018-2019 £1,286
2017-2018 £1,365
2016-2017 £11,630
2015-2016 £19,421
2014-2015 £16,709
Total value of pheasant, partridge and duck sold each
season.
The number of birds released has been similar each season
with our average target bag approximately 240 birds per day for over the last
12 years.
Our
Plan for the New Season
Our game dealer is very happy with the quality and size of our partridge, duck and cock pheasants and we are all aware that hen birds are tastier. However the continental market is more interested in size so prefer cock pheasants to hen pheasants.
Although our dealers will take
some hen pheasant they ask if we could also move some of these birds.
Crowning
Machine
You may have read in the shooting press about this new device for removing the crown of any bird, pheasant, partridge, duck or pigeon. The “Crown” is the two breasts of a bird which are the parts we require.
I have purchased a Crowning machine,
wrapping machine, packets and cling film for packing the Crowns.
In the past at the end of each
shoot day guns were given a choice of pheasant or partridge breasts . Similar will be offered in the new season
except guns will receive whole crowns processed on our premises.
I definitely do not want to
become a game processor but we will have more hen pheasants available than will
be taken by the guns each day. We plan
to produce as many hen pheasant crowns as guns and staff require free of
charge. We may need to establish an
ordering system in order that everyone receives what they require. The only rule is that as the crowns are
supplied at no cost they cannot be sold on.
Should you feel so inclined a donation to the BGA would be appreciated.
When crowns are produced we are
left with the remainder of the bird i.e. legs and feathers which we burn in our
incinerator. We have had an incinerator
for over 12 years. It is invaluable in
disposing of all vermin and damaged birds and will now be very useful in
disposing of this unwanted material.
The rules on the use of an
incinerator are very strict. It must be
approved and inspected annually by a Ministry Vet. The temperatures of each burn must be recorded
and we must have a licence for the disposal of the ash. We have no problem with this having done it
for over 12 years. However for anyone
new it is just another hoop to jump through to be able to dispose of bird
remains legally.
Shoot
Lunches
Over recent years we have offered partridge or pheasant on at least one day each week to guns for lunch.
I appreciate anyone joining us
for a few consecutive days may not wish to have game served to them too often,
so there will be alternative main courses available each day.
I have discussed our lunches with
Ollie Stewart, Catering Manager of Ripley Castle who provides all our lunches
at both Ripley Castle and Mountgarret.
He proposes providing more game based lunches in various forms. He also hopes to produce a booklet detailing
these dishes so you can serve them at home.
Any ideas on shoot lunches which include game would be well received.
Remaining Shoot Days
There has been an excellent take up of days with a good variety still available.
I am pleased to enclose a list of
our remaining days. As there are a
number of days not included in previous lists please check if there is anything
which may now be workable for you.
For an update on availability please visit our website www.ripleycastleshoot.com and www.gunsonpegs.com. Both are updated daily and are iPhone and android accessible and now have a responsive design image, whatever all this means!
Full Exclusive Teams
There are a number of days on the enclosed list of available dates where no guns have been taken.
These days are available as
Exclusive Days for full teams such as a Roving Syndicate or for Corporate
Entertainment. The actual target bag and
drives can be tailored to suit the host.
Confirmation of Booking
I would like to thank those of you who have not only booked your days in the new season but have also paid your initial shoot fees and in a number of cases all your shoot fees, which I really do appreciate.
I am pleased to enclose a copy of
your Confirmation of Booking which acknowledges your payments together with
details of when other instalments are due.
There are a few initial payments
still outstanding with the second instalment due in May. As this is a heavy time for the shoot bank
account I would appreciate it if you could pay your first and second
instalments of shoot fees as soon as possible.
Most important of all, could you please double check the dates on your confirmation in order to ensure I have understood your requirements correctly. If you wish to change any dates please consider this as soon as possible in order to give me ample time to re-sell.
Exclusive Membership
I am often asked if there are any cheap days available where I have been unable to sell all the pegs. There are days normally available which we will sell at a discount. However in my mind, these days should be offered to guns who support the Shoot.
As the majority of our days are sold by
the gun per day to individual guns or small parties making up the team on a
shoot day. I have established Exclusive
Membership as a way of thanking and rewarding individual guns for their
support. Purchasing shoot days to the
value of £2,500 or more before VAT qualifies for Exclusive Membership. This applies to individual guns or where a
team have booked, paid individually and collectively achieved £2,500 or more
before VAT, then all members of the team are eligible for Exclusive Membership.
The following are the present benefits of
Exclusive Members:
Last
Minute Availability for Exclusive Members
It is inevitable that by the way I run the Shoot selling mainly to individual guns, that once the season starts I am often faced with the dilemma of whether or not to field a day where some pegs remain unsold. In the past I have sometimes cancelled days and asked guns to move to other days or invited shoot guests and farmers at the last minute to take up a peg, which I may well still continue to do. A day will be run providing a minimum of six pegs have been sold but the target bag may be revised in line with the number of guns fielded.
Exclusive
Members will be offered by e-mail, at reasonably short notice a selection of
dates where there are unsold pegs. You
will receive a list of dates with attractive discounts offered on the original
fee. I know there will definitely be a
number of special offer days in the new
season at discounted prices. However
based on the present take up of days there may not be as many as in the past.
You may purchase as many of the discounted pegs as you wish for yourself and to bring one or more guests on any of the days not just the days you have already booked. You must of course be present on the day when you bring a guest at the discounted rates.
Exclusive Membership Card for Exclusive Members
In order to verify your Exclusive Membership of Ripley Sporting each Exclusive Member is issued with a plastic card. The card includes your Membership Number with my contact phone numbers on the reverse. Should any of the retailers and suppliers require verification of your membership they can contact me at any time.
In order to protect your privacy
no names, addresses or contact details will be given to a third party.
For eligible guns this season’s
card is enclosed.
Purchasing
Discounts for Exclusive Members
There are a number of retailers and suppliers who support our shoot and are prepared to offer attractive discounts on selected products and supplies.
shotgun Servicing and Fitting
Each season I remind you all about the need to have your guns serviced before the start of the season. A few seasons ago it certainly proved necessary for me. I am one of the few “enlightened” game shots who still shoot side by side shotguns!! Not only this but my guns are now 128 years old. So I suppose I can expect to have a few problems. They performed well during the season so once we stopped shooting they went in for service. Steve Baren our local gunsmith noticed a crack in the main spring of one which would have inevitably failed. It was necessary to have a new main spring made by a specialist which took over three months. This together with the fact that most carriers will no longer handle firearms meant it had to be transported by hand which added to the problem.
I
describe this as if I had not sent my guns for service the problem would not
have been spotted and would have occurred during the season which could have
spoilt some of my early grouse days when double guns may be shot. The moral to the tale is to have shotguns
serviced in good time. With only four
months until the start of the season I know all the gunsmiths are becoming
quite busy.
One
other point to consider is to have a spare shotgun with you on a shoot
day. Last season there were a number of
occasions when shotguns failed and surprisingly many were new or nearly new
guns. When this happens there is
normally a spare gun available. However
not everyone wishes to loan his spare gun and it will inevitably not fit. An inexpensive spare gun, fitted for you or
at least with a stock of a length suitable for you is well worth having with
you on a shoot day.
If
you are looking for a competent gunsmith I can highly recommend Steve Baren on
07786 370848 who works out of the Yorkshire Gun Room. The Gun Room is only 5 minutes’ drive from
Ripley and Steve is available on most shoot days at either Ripley Castle or
Mountgarret either loading or helping on the Shoot.
If you are considering buying a shotgun, I do suggest you have it fitted. Finding a competent gun dealer and gunsmith is not easy. However I am pleased to advise we have this facility available 5 minutes’ drive from Ripley Castle.

Jeff
Lupton, who in his younger years was a clay pigeon champion, holds an extensive
stock of shotguns and rifles so is well worth a visit. If you are considering buying a shotgun you
can try it first on their shooting ground.
Finally
and most importantly, for actual shotgun fitting you will find it very hard to
find anything better than the combined knowledge and experience of Jeff and
Steve. I do strongly recommend their
services.
Instructors and
Loaders
Over the years I have convinced many of my friends that having someone to look after you on the day can be a real advantage and improves your performance. It also gives you plenty of time to work your dog at the end of a drive when you don’t need to worry about your gun or clearing up your spent cartridges.
For
anyone new to and with limited driven game shooting experience it is
essential. On the grouse Moor not many
guns now shoot without a loader, even when shooting with single guns. Having two pairs of eyes spotting on the
Moor, I feel really improves your day.
After over 50 years of driven game shooting I now never shoot without a
loader. I do not feel double guns are
necessary on partridge or pheasant, however for grouse on some days it can
improve your performance. On our Shoot
we only shoot single guns.
Having
a loader to stuff cartridges is very useful, however having one of our
loader/instructors to show you where you are possibly going wrong, really does
improve your day. My encouraging guns to
have someone with them has given me a problem as our instructor/loaders are now
in big demand, not only on our Shoot but by guns taking them elsewhere. So for this reason if you wish to have
someone to look after you could you please let me know as soon as
possible. Cost is £100 for the
instructor/loader and £50 for shotgun hire if required.
As
always lead and non-toxic cartridges for 12 and 20 gauge are available to
purchase on every shoot day.

Other than the lack of rain, everything is in place for another great season. I will keep you all advised of our further progress.
